In the heart of Konavle, where the sun kisses the vineyards and history whispers through every vine, a moment of immeasurable value has taken place for Croatian winemaking. Our winemaker, Niko Karaman, a dedicated researcher and guardian of tradition, has achieved what once seemed impossible – saving Malvasija Dubrovačka from extinction and securing its future.
His perseverance, dedication, and unwavering passion have resulted in the official recognition of the certified clone VV-141, a selection that will serve as the foundation for the future propagation of this exceptional grape variety.
The Search for the Perfect Vine
The journey to save Malvasija Dubrovačka began eight years ago when Niko Karaman, along with his colleagues, embarked on an extensive search through the vineyards of Konavle. Their goal was to identify the vine with the best characteristics – superior aromatic components, exceptional grape quality, and, most importantly, resistance to the five most dangerous vineyard viruses.
The research was painstaking and time-consuming. Dozens of vines were marked, numerous samples were taken, and they were sent for analysis to the renowned Geisenheim Institute in Germany. Despite the extensive search, only one vine in Niko’s vineyard was found to be completely free of harmful viruses. This single vine became the foundation for the creation of the certified clone VV-141.
The Process of Creating a Certified Clone
Once the healthy vine was identified, a lengthy process of reproduction and testing began. For the clone to be officially recognized, multiple years of vinification trials were required – three consecutive wine productions using this clone that confirmed its superior qualities.
But the process didn’t stop there. Every new vine must be grafted onto a virus-free rootstock to ensure long-term resistance to diseases. To achieve this, Karaman has established a collaboration with a certified nursery in Spain, where these vines will be produced under strict health standards.
- “This is just the beginning – now we need to plant a mother vineyard with this clone so that we can propagate the vines and secure the future of Malvasija Dubrovačka,” says Karaman.
The History and Significance of Malvasija Dubrovačka
Malvasija Dubrovačka is one of the most treasured autochthonous grape varieties of southern Croatia. For centuries, this wine was served at the banquets of the Dubrovnik Republic, holding a reputation as a drink of nobility. However, over time, the cultivation of this variety declined, and Malvasija faced near extinction.
Thanks to the dedication of Vinarija Karaman and the support of Dubrovnik-Neretva County, the City of Dubrovnik, and the Municipality of Konavle, Malvasija Dubrovačka has not only been saved but now has a scientifically validated and certified clone VV-141 to ensure its long-term survival.
Public Presentation of the Clone Selection at Sponza Palace
To share this historic achievement with the public, Vinarija Karaman is organizing a special presentation of the project in the atrium of Sponza Palace. With the presence of scientists, winemakers, investors, and wine lovers, all details of this extensive research and the future plans for the development of Malvasija Dubrovačka will be revealed.
This event marks a turning point – a moment when an autochthonous wine heritage is not only preserved but reborn through scientifically backed restoration.
The Future of Malvasija Dubrovačka
With the official recognition of VV-141, Vinarija Karaman is laying the groundwork for increased yet controlled production of Malvasija Dubrovačka vines and wines. In the coming years, this clone will be the source of new vineyards, not only in Konavle but beyond, ensuring the continuity of its quality and authenticity.
At Vinarija Karaman, our mission is not just about producing exceptional wine – it’s about preserving a legacy that spans centuries. Malvasija Dubrovačka now has a future, and we are proud to be part of this historic moment.
